DESCRIPTION:
Photo Probes was an interactive exhibit designed to educate the public about endoscopic procedures. The design lets users play doctor, letting them to do both an upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series and a colonoscopy on a virtual patient. Using a modified game controller, users direct their fiber-optic probe through the digestive tract in order to reveal a hidden ailment. Common video game mechanics, such as a time limit, health bar, score, and multiple objectives, were put in place in order to keep the experience fresh, engaging, and competitive.  Real-time endoscopic video feed was thought to sync to the player’s progress as they explored the digestive tract, and managing common conditions (i.e. polyps, cancer, and parasites) was planned as main in-game task. Ultimately, the simulator’s objective was to explain the goals and challenges of a real procedure.
